Its that time again to sign up for a table at the American Legion Holiday Craft Fair. Bring out your best hand made items for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas & New Years. I just thought I would share with all of you some photos taken at some of our recent classes. Knitting seems to be the most popular right now but Crochet is catching up.
One on One 2 1/2 hour Beginner classes are now only $25 each which includes Yarn, Needles and instruction manual. Step 2 or 3 classes are only $15 per hour. Most planned projects will only take you an hour. Call or Email us for more information and to make a reservation.

Don't worry, we are not closing! We are making some cosmetic changes to the shoppe. We have basically looked the same for the last 30+ years. We now have some new racks so we will be moving things around a bit. We hope when we're finished it will be easier for people to find things and a bit easier to move around.
Starting this week until July 10th we will be renovating, but I stress, we will remain OPEN during this time. Items may be in boxes as we move them around so we ask for your patience when you come in while we find the item you need. We will continue to order stock and can still custom order anything you like. The only thing that we will not be holding during this time, is our classes. Classes will resume July 11th so please make your reservations now.

Design your own water globe or mug. The pre-printed inserts can be colored in by little ones or older kids can draw their own designs and add a picture. These can also be decorated on the outside to add some personalization.

We also have Ceramic Mugs and markers that can be decorated. The markers are great for decorating glass or ceramic but do require a clear sealer if you want your design to be permanent.

Donna Dewberry Comes to Glendale

Today was the last day of her 3 day painting extravaganza here in Glendale. She did a workshop to teach her one stroke method of painting and seeing what everyone was able to do really got me interested.
Our store has had some of her items in stock but after meeting her and seeing her teach I plan to bring in even more of her supplies, DVD's and instruction books. She is really a genuine and nice person. If you ever get the chance to meet her at one of her events, jump at it. When she decides to come back in town I will be sure to post is here.

I found out recently that Spinrite, the makers of Bernat, Lily Sugar'n Cream and Patons yarns just purchased Pisgah Yarn company who makes Peaches & Cream, America's Best & Honeysuckle yarns.

There is no word yet on what brands will be kept but its easy to say that if you're making something right now with either of their yarns you should make sure to have enough on hand to finish what you're working on. Pisgah's web site is having an "inventory reduction" sale so stock up now if there is a product you really love and won't be able to live with out.
I want to first say I have nothing against Spinrite. I love and carry their yarns along side other popular brands. What I am sad to hear is that US jobs are lost because of this. Spinrite is in Canada and Pisgah was in North Carolina. Below are 2 links you should take the time read. The first is about Pisgah closing and the other is from the Wall Street Journal about Cotton Prices going up soon because of a string of bad harvest. This means yarn prices will be going up soon if they haven't already at your local store. I will be raising my prices slowly as current yarn is stock is cycled out and new yarn comes in.

Knit and Crochet in any Language

Being a business in Queens I'm lucky enough to have customers from all over the world. Some have an understanding of the english language but not always. I know a little bit of Spanish but only enough to get myself in trouble, other languages I know much less. I am able to get instruction books in Spanish but not other languages from my current distributors.

In order to try and service all my customers I have been trying to get books in other languages but no luck so far. What I did find was a wonderful web site that helps convert knitting and crochet patterns to your native language.

Wise Needle http://www.wiseneedle.com/ has a wonderful community and glossary of terms that is FREE to use. You just put in a term and choose the language. Very quickly it will give you the term in your own language. This is a great way for children of family members that are un able to speak the language to convert patterns.

From Red Heart they will be selling 1,000 yard size 10 thread for only $6.25. For now they only have 2 colors but maybe if we request it enough, they will make other colors in the bigger balls too. If you look really hard, you'll see that Red Heart is actually from Coats & Clark which is the same company that packages the Aunt Lydia Size 10. Maybe we will see a combination of the brands soon.

Right now the only company that sells big balls of colored crochet cotton is Pisgah Yarn Company. I can order them for you by request.

Aunt Lydia Size 10 Crochet Cotton is also coming out with some new colors. These will also be in stock soon. Let me know if you're interested so I can order enough for everyone.

Todays Tatting Class

Today by request we had a tatting class which was a lot of fun to watch. Other classes I've taught myself so it was nice to have a guest instructor in doing all the work.
Angie from Agasunset.com is a beautiful Tatter and knows all the different styles of the craft. Her unique designs and love of the medium really show in the work she does. Here are some pictures from the class.

Bringing in the New Year

Happy New Year everyone. Over these long weekends we've re-decorated the window for Valentines, St. Patricks Day and Easter. Believe me, if you're planning to make something for one of these holidays you really should get started now!
So here is what the window looks like now... still needs a little work but I really love that we finally wired up the neon sign we got used last year.

Then of course I looked through my distributors sale sheets and created our flyer for this month. If you're hoping something is going to go on sale, let me know. Sometimes the distributor does a short sale that will never make it into my announcement.

Ceramic Tree Bulbs

I'm always surprised every year how many people tell me these are hard to find. So I figured I would remind my customers and friends that I have the bulbs in 3 different sizes and 4 different shapes. I also have the light bulb for inside the tree and the tree tops.

Its coming time to do inventory. For the last 40 years the family (and some friends) have gotten together and hand counted every item in the store on paper. For the last few years I've then taken all this and entered into excel to get the final number to give to our accountant. I really wish I could use the camera on my iPod Touch as a bar code scanner where the information would drop into an excel like piece of software. I realize it would take some time to set up I think it would be quicker and more accurate.

So I put this out to the interwebs. Is there a program that does this? Is there someone who has solved this problem already and feels like sharing??

The newest company I am now stocking is Jean Greenhowe Knitting Pattern Books. These are some of the most original and detailed 3D knitting items I have ever seen.

I found out about her books from a customer who asked me for 1. I did some research and placed the order. The books came quick and in perfect condition ready to sell.

Sad News

I know its been a while since I updated here. Life and the store have been a bit crazy. My Grandmother, the founder of Cook's Arts and Crafts passed away on April 10. Here is a picture of her taken in a Brooklyn Park in the late 1920's or early 1930's. She was 90 years young and was in the store 6 days a week until March of this year when she broke her hip.

I love babies. My friend is having her second, which means I can't remake one shes already seen so I started searching. Leisure Arts has a beautiful book called Dynamic Designs, #3845. Its patterns for adult blankets but that didn't stop me. I wanted Lilac & Lemon so I took the Bernet Softee Baby and got started. I have about 3 months until she pops. :) What possessed me to pick a pattern with mostly single crochets is beyond me.

My new Project - Store Apron

I've been thinking about designing a Store T-Shirt and then decided to make an apron to wear in the shop. Loew-Cornell makes this affordable blank adult apron. But as you can see, it is blank, no pocket nothing. lol. So I've decided to CrossStitch "Cook's Crafts" along the top, maybe put some hand prints in paint on it, put some beads around the edge or collor and crochet a pocket. Well I had some scrap left of Potpourri Print Handicrafters Cotton yarn so I crocheted this little pocket. But thats as far as I've gotten so far. I'll update you all as I go along.

Every summer sales of lanyard and floss go up. Kids of all ages love to make bracelets and keychains. Since money is tight all around I'm having a few specials right now.

First up is lanyard spool. Mini spools are $.79 each but if you buy 5 you get one free.

Making a useful clock out of Garbage - You can take Anything, an old record, grandma's old hat, a wall hanging, it doesn't matter the size or shape. Then you pick up the Clock works, I suggest anything from Walnut Hallow (which I carry). Their 3 piece starter kit has everything for $7.29. You get stick on numbers, arms and the works. All the directions are in it.

I was reading the Daily News last week and there was a full page story about a Nasty Sock store owner that yells at his customers, eats his employee's lunches and doesn't care people think that way about him. Well, why would he care. The Daily News has given him thousands of dollars worth of FREE advertising for being an ass. Now I bet people are gonna go check this store out just to see what all the fuss is about. Think back to the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. That store also became famous and successful for being nasty, not just because he had good soup. Why does this world praise the negative? Maybe this is why my store sales are so low, not because of the economy, but because I'm so nice.

Memories from Grandma

Anyone who has been in the store knows that my Grandma has been here a long time. Since 1971 to be exact. Over these years some unforgettable things have happened so I thought I would blog about one that was just reminded to us.

Over this past weekend we cleaned the windows out and installed lights. Well, we were here pretty late and this women came in who was so happy to see we were still here. She asked how Grandma was, as of this entry she is 89, (born in 1919) and doing well. She then told us how she first met Grandma. Many years ago she was in with her Mom on their way back from a jewelery store and mistakenly left their jewelry behind. My Dad found it and gave it to Grandma who called the jeweler and told him if someone called that they lost jewelery to call her, but she refused to say what it was that she found. Well luckily the women called and was so happy to have her jewelry back she gave grandma a gift. Today, Grandma was so happy to hear that the women remembered her and her kind deed. She would love if the women would come back to the store when she's here.

"Knock wood" Grandma has a great memory and as she recalls funny things I will continue to blog them. If you are ever in town come by the shop, she would love a fresh pair of ears to talk to.

I have this bad habit of when someone comes in and buys something I hand them their change and say thank you. But after today I'm going to count every bill into their hand. Today this 6 foot tall man with a tattoo on his neck claimed I didn't give him the right change when I know what was in my drawer and what I gave him. It's my own fault for not counting the change into his hand as I gave it to him. Live and learn but karma will come back to him. Its just another reason to get my video camera's set up.

Well, sorry listeners. I haven't recorded a podcast in over a week but I do have a good excuse. My friend is pregnant with her second child. Well I was working when she had her first child so I never made her anything. Soooo, I've been feverishly making the toddler a poncho, matching hat and a blanket, plus I'm making a baby blanket for her her new addition.

Well, I missed out. Another Cook owned Cookscrafts.com. They were a woodworking place in PA and that was fine. I know Cook is a popular name, so I got cookscrafts.info for Grandma's store. Then yesterday I got an email from a company that bought the .com when the original owner didn't renew it. They want $557 to transfer it to me. WTF!! Thats crazy. So I emailed them and they asked.."What are you willing to pay and I'll bring it to my manager".. Yea, OK ya know what keep it! I went ahead and got the .biz and I'll just stick with what I have. I'll watch and maybe next year the company will let it expire and I can add it to my account. What I need is some low cost local advertising. And when I say low cost, I mean shoestring.

Episode 34 - Craft Helpers

Today I'd like to talk about craft helpers. Things that help us either see our crafts better or craft more comfortably.

So lets talk about the right lighting. Its very important that the area you craft in is well lit. The type of light you use will determine if your colors are true and your eyes don't get strained. Especially if your doing needlework or painting. OttLight makes a wide range of True Color lights from floor lamps with adjustable arms to clip on lights ranging in price from 49.99 to over 200.00

Now that you have the right lights, let make sure you can see well. Some of these lights come with magnifiers attached, which is really great for fine needlework and embroidery. You can also get clip on magnifiers and sheet magnifiers that help with reading patterns. Just remember that the higher the magnification the smaller the magnifier will become. The Ultimate Armchair magnifying Lamp has light, a magnifier and a clip to hold your pattern for $259.99, a bit pricy but if you craft for profit you can make this back quickly by being able to craft longer more comfortably. Another magnifier option is the MagEyes. this fits on your head like a head band and you can adjust it to see your work. This is what my grandma has been using for years to be able to see her craft work. They are relatively inexpensive at 34.99. But if you really need to see fine detail work you might want to consider OptiVisor Optical Glass Binoculars. These start around $40 and are more powerful for the really fine detail work you might do with jewlery.

Your hands are a very important thing to a crafter so you need to make sure to take good care of them. But when your crafting you don't want to use a greasy hand cream that will dirty your work. Well there are a few places that make cream just for us. Thimbleberries inc has a Hand Care Lotion thats non-greasy which moisturizes your hands, not your projects. for about $18 for a large pump. Sew help me is another brand that come in smaller travel tubes.

But sometimes your hands get tired crocheting those 20 doilies you promised and you need a little support. HandEze are fingerless gloves that support your hand and wrist while you work and are very comfortable. I don't craft with out them. From their sale sheet. “HandEze therapeutic craft gloves provide non-restrictive support for both hands and wrists. HandEze retains body heat which will help improve circulation, massages hands with four way stretch lycra and is proven to produce relief from arthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and continuous motion syndrome.”

From the same company that brings us magEyes they have The Body Rite Posture Pleaser It's an ergonomic posture aid that reduces neck and upper back pain. At around $40 its a steal to help us with our postures.

Remember when you're crafting, get up, stretch. Make sure you have a comfortable chair in a well lit area. You will be crafting for a long time as long as you take care of your body.

Episode 29 we talked about Easter Crafts

This year Easter sneaks up on us on March 23rd, less than a week after St. Patrick’s day. Which really cuts into the decorating time between the two. The first thing I think of around easter to make are bunnies.
On our flicker page are pictures of bunnies made from loopy chenille wrapped around styrofoam. My favorite is this bunny hugging a giant carrot.

A good book from the talented Ginny Lowe at Sbars is "loopy friends" you may be able to find it on the web. It has loopy chenille patterns for bunnies and chicks that are quick to make and oh so cute.

Also on our flicker page is a picture of a cute little chick family made with some yarn wrapped around a styrofoam ball. A small piece of cardboard is wrapped in felt for a base that can be decorated for clothing.

Name Change

Well, as you can see, I've had to change the name of my Podcast show. It seems that an extra letter and an extra word doesn't stop someone from threatening you with trademark infringement. I didn't know anyone had the rights to trademark regular words but I guess I'm wrong. I was gonna call our lawyer in the morning, but my 90 year old Grandmother, who is still the boss, feels its not worth the money to fight. I'm very disappointed. I now have to go back and re-record 20+ shows, contact itunes to remove my show and hope no one attacks my new name. All I'm trying to do is keep my Grandmothers store in business. She's been doing this for over 36 years and now has to contend with AC Moore being a few blocks away and as of Feb. 2nd Micheal's opened up around the corner from AC Moore. How the heck can a little store survive when it feels like there is so much against them?

Well I better get to work.

So its coming down to the wire. Not that many days till Christmas. Here are some great ideas to give the Crafter in your life thats sure to make them happy.

Gift Certificate to their favorite craft store. Even small stores like mine have gift certificates. Sometimes around this time you even get bonuses.
For the knitter or crocheter you can get

a bag to carry their needles and/or work.
If there a beginner you can get them a set of various needle sizes. We just got a set for $19.99 that comes with 1 ergonomic handle, 1 regular handle and 6 interchangeable screw-on needles.
Notions are always needed, stitch markers, stitch gage, point protectors and counters are great little add ones and fit in the stocking or can be hung on the tree like an ornament!

Pattern and idea books are great, every crafter loves some fresh ideas or even get them a subscription to a craft magazine. Everytime they get the mag they will think of you.
